IN BLOOM

SYNOPSIS

“In Bloom” explores slow design practices to create a collection of high quality and timeless textiles. With the objective to encourage users to become active participants in purchasing sustainable goods and embracing ideas of conviviality. The collection presents digital printed textiles, featuring floral motifs. They are intended for commercial clothing line, seasoned for spring and summer. The target audience is for women in their early 20s and beyond, who admire flattering and feminine prints.

The concept for “In Bloom” began from researching sustainable design strategies for textile and fashion designers. Coming across various strategies, the most ideal and appropriate approach for this project was Slow Design. Slow Design is a holistic approach to creative thinking, process and outcomes. Taking into account the origin of the material, incorporating local knowledge into design and designing heirloom quality that is built for the ages. The project focuses on only using natural fabrics and manufacturing from local industries. Additionally seeking to find timeless print can be worn repeatedly without going out of style, the theme references flowers and nature. The design collection aims to build a long-term relationship between the product and its owner.

Motifs are hand drawn from floral references including daisy, magnolia, orchid, peony and many more. The pastel colour palette was derived from the natural hues and tones found in a spring garden. Motifs were then scanned and reworked using digital software, Illustrator and Photoshop. Put into repeat patterns in different forms of size and scale. The final textile designs were digitally printed onto cotton fabrics and manufactured at a local business in Sydney. Choosing natural fabric over synthetic fabrics for its characteristics and its minor environmental impact.
